George Carlin (May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008) was an American stand-up comedian, actor and writer, born in Manhattan, New York City. After a stint in the U.S. Air Force and work as a radio DJ, he became a clean-cut TV comic in the 1960s before reinventing himself around 1970 as a long-haired counterculture comedian who questioned language, authority and social customs.
His famous routine about the "seven words you can never say on television" led to a landmark 1978 U.S. Supreme Court case. He hosted the very first episode of *Saturday Night Live* in 1975, recorded 14 HBO comedy specials, won five Grammy Awards and, to a younger generation, was the narrator of *Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends* in the U.S. He was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humour shortly after his death.
