George Bernard Shaw (July 26, 1856 – November 2, 1950) was an Irish playwright, critic and political activist, born in Dublin. At 20 he moved to London, where he struggled for years as a novelist before making his name as a sharp-tongued music and theatre critic. He became a leading member of the Fabian Society, campaigning for social reform, and was known for his outspoken views on politics, religion and society.

Shaw wrote more than 60 plays, including *Arms and the Man*, *Man and Superman*, *Major Barbara*, *Pygmalion* and *Saint Joan*. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925 and an Academy Award in 1939 for the screenplay of *Pygmalion*, making him the first person to receive both honours.
