About Plato
Greek - Philosopher | c. 427 BC - c. 347 BC
Plato (c. 427 – c. 347 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher, born into an aristocratic family in Athens. According to tradition his real name was Aristocles, and "Plato" was a nickname. As a young man he became a devoted follower of Socrates, and the trial and execution of his teacher in 399 BC shaped the rest of his life.
Around 387 BC Plato founded the Academy in Athens, often called the first university in the Western world, where Aristotle studied for 20 years. Plato wrote about 35 dialogues, usually featuring Socrates as the main speaker, including the *Republic*, *Symposium*, *Phaedo* and *Apology*. His ideas about justice, the soul, the ideal state and the Theory of Forms, along with the famous Allegory of the Cave, laid the foundations of Western philosophy. Here are 50 genuine Plato quotes.
