About P. T. Barnum
American - Showman & Businessman | July 5, 1810 - April 7, 1891
P. T. Barnum (July 5, 1810 – April 7, 1891), born Phineas Taylor Barnum in Bethel, Connecticut, was an American showman, businessman, author and politician. After running a store and a newspaper, he entered show business in the 1830s and in 1841 opened Barnum's American Museum in New York, famous for curiosities, performers such as General Tom Thumb, and hoaxes he cheerfully called "humbugs." His early career also included exploitative exhibitions, most notoriously of Joice Heth, an elderly enslaved woman.
Barnum organised the hugely successful American tour of Swedish singer Jenny Lind and, at the age of 60, launched the travelling circus that became "Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth." He later served in the Connecticut legislature, where he spoke for ending slavery and voted to ratify the 13th Amendment, and was mayor of Bridgeport. His life inspired the 2017 film *The Greatest Showman*. Here are 40 P. T. Barnum quotes.
