Napoleon Bonaparte (August 15, 1769 – May 5, 1821) was a French military commander and statesman, born in Ajaccio on the island of Corsica. Trained as an artillery officer, he rose rapidly during the French Revolution, seized power in 1799 as First Consul and crowned himself Emperor of the French in 1804.
Napoleon won a remarkable series of battles and built an empire across much of Europe. His Napoleonic Code reshaped law in France and many other countries. His wars also cost millions of lives, and in 1802 he restored slavery in France's colonies. After a disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812, he was exiled to Elba, returned briefly, and was finally defeated at Waterloo in 1815. He died in exile on the island of Saint Helena.
