About Maya Angelou

American - Poet & Author | April 4, 1928 - May 28, 2014

Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014), born Marguerite Annie Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, was an American poet, memoirist and civil rights activist. Raised largely by her grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas, she stopped speaking for nearly five years after a traumatic childhood experience, finding comfort in books and poetry. She later worked as a dancer, singer, actress and journalist in Egypt and Ghana, and worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

Her 1969 memoir *I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings*, the first of seven autobiographies, made her internationally famous. In 1993 she read her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at President Bill Clinton's inauguration, and she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2022 she became the first Black woman to appear on a U.S. quarter. Here are 50 Maya Angelou quotes.
