Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister and the most prominent leader of the civil rights movement, born in Atlanta, Georgia. After studying at Morehouse College, Crozer Theological Seminary and Boston University, he became pastor of a church in Montgomery, Alabama, where he led the 1955–56 bus boycott that launched him to national leadership.

His work helped bring about the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and in 1964 he became the youngest person at the time to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
