Kobe Bryant (August 23, 1978 – January 26, 2020) was an American professional basketball player, born in Philadelphia, the son of former NBA player Joe "Jellybean" Bryant. He spent part of his childhood in Italy and joined the NBA straight out of high school in 1996, going on to play all 20 of his seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Known as the "Black Mamba," Bryant won five NBA championships, two Olympic gold medals and the 2008 MVP award, and once scored 81 points in a single game. His career was also marked by a 2003 sexual assault case in Colorado; the criminal charge was dropped and a civil suit was settled. After retiring in 2016, he won an Academy Award in 2018 for the animated short *Dear Basketball*.
