About Diogenes

Greek - Philosopher | c. 412 BC - 323 BC

Diogenes of Sinope (c. 412 BC – 323 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher, born in Sinope on the Black Sea coast of present-day Turkey. Exiled after a scandal involving the city's coinage, he moved to Athens, where he became the most famous figure of Cynic philosophy, a way of life that rejected wealth, fame and social customs in favour of simple, natural living.

Diogenes owned almost nothing and is said to have lived in a large clay jar in the Athens marketplace. He was known for his sharp wit and shocking public stunts, from carrying a lamp in daylight "looking for a human being" to telling Alexander the Great to step out of his sunlight. He spent his later years in Corinth. None of his writings survive, so his sayings come down to us through ancient writers, especially Diogenes Laërtius. Here are 50 of the best Diogenes quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about Diogenes and these famous quotes.

Who was Diogenes?

Diogenes of Sinope was a Greek philosopher of the 4th century BC and the most famous member of the Cynic school. He lived in deliberate poverty to show that happiness comes from virtue and simple living, not wealth or status.

What does "Cynic" mean?

The word "Cynic" comes from the Greek *kynikos*, meaning "dog-like." Diogenes was nicknamed "the Dog" because he lived openly and shamelessly in public, and he proudly accepted the name.

Did Diogenes really live in a barrel?

Ancient sources say he lived in a large clay storage jar called a *pithos* in the Athens marketplace. It is often described today as a "barrel" or "tub."

What happened when Diogenes met Alexander the Great?

According to tradition, Alexander found Diogenes relaxing in the sun in Corinth and offered him any wish. Diogenes simply asked him to step aside because he was blocking the sunlight. Alexander reportedly said, "If I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes."

Which popular Diogenes quotes are misattributed?

"We have two ears and one tongue so that we would listen more and talk less" is credited to Zeno of Citium. "A friend is one soul abiding in two bodies" is Aristotle's, and "I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance" is linked to Socrates.

Why did Diogenes carry a lamp in daylight?

He walked through Athens in broad daylight holding a lit lamp, saying he was "looking for a human being." It was his way of mocking people for failing to live honestly and reasonably.
