The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso (born July 6, 1935), is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. Born Lhamo Thondup into a farming family in the village of Taktser in northeastern Tibet, he was recognised at the age of two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama and formally enthroned in Lhasa in 1940.

In 1959, following an uprising against Chinese rule, he fled to India, where he has lived in exile in Dharamsala ever since, leading the Tibetan community abroad.
