About Carl Jung
Swiss - Psychiatrist | July 26, 1875 - June 6, 1961
Carl Jung (July 26, 1875 – June 6, 1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, born in Kesswil, Switzerland. After studying medicine in Basel, he worked at the Burghölzli psychiatric hospital in Zurich and became a close collaborator of Sigmund Freud, before the two split in 1913 over their different views of the mind.
Jung went on to found analytical psychology and introduced ideas that are now part of everyday language, including introversion and extraversion, archetypes, the collective unconscious, the shadow and synchronicity. His book *Psychological Types* later inspired the Myers-Briggs personality test, and his autobiography *Memories, Dreams, Reflections* remains widely read. Here are 50 of the best Carl Jung quotes.

Who was Carl Jung?
Carl Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist who founded analytical psychology. He is known for ideas such as the collective unconscious, archetypes, the shadow and the personality types of introversion and extraversion.
What was Carl Jung's relationship with Sigmund Freud?
Jung and Freud worked closely from 1907, and Freud once saw Jung as his successor. They split in 1913, mainly because Jung disagreed with Freud's focus on sexuality and developed his own broader view of the unconscious.
Is the Myers-Briggs test based on Carl Jung?
Yes. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was created by Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers, based on the ideas in Jung's 1921 book *Psychological Types*.
What is the "shadow" in Jung's psychology?
The shadow is Jung's term for the hidden parts of our personality that we don't want to admit to, such as weaknesses or impulses. He believed that becoming aware of the shadow is key to personal growth.
Did Jung say "I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become"?
No. This popular line doesn't appear in Jung's writings. Likewise, "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate" is a modern paraphrase of his actual words: "When an inner situation is not made conscious, it appears outside as fate."
What is Jung's Red Book?
*The Red Book* is a large illustrated journal Jung kept from 1913 to around 1930, recording his dreams, visions and inner experiences. It remained private for decades and was finally published in 2009.
